Design Diaries: From Nursery to Toddler Room – Growing Up in Style with Joanna Landais
As babies become toddlers, their world expands—and so should their space. In the next phase of our design collaboration, Blue Almonds and interior designer Joanna Landais unveil a thoughtful transformation from a peaceful nursery into a playful, personality-filled toddler room.
But according to Joanna, the real magic in this transition lies not in the furniture or layout.
“It’s All About the Textiles and Accessories”
“Surprisingly, it’s not the furniture or the backdrop that steals the show,” Joanna explains. “It’s all about textiles and accessories! These differences might seem subtle, but they truly transform a project.”
In the nursery, the design centred around soft colours and delicate, whimsical prints. But now, the toddler room welcomes bolder, more confident design choices. The palette stays calm and cohesive, but the details get a grown-up twist.

From Whimsy to Wow: Playing with Pattern and Scale
One of Joanna’s key design principles is to let the visual language grow alongside the child.
“As children get older, the size of patterns should scale up too,” she notes. We’ve moved away from tiny illustrations and pastel motifs to embrace larger, more graphic patterns that feel age-appropriate and fun.
This might look like switching out the nursery’s miniature florals or stars for bold stripes, geometric prints, or animal characters with more defined shapes. The bedding could remain soft and neutral to keep the space calming—but it can be accented with vibrant cushions, statement rugs, and playful wall art.
Accessories That Educate and Inspire
The toddler years are all about discovery. With that in mind, Joanna incorporated quirky educational wall décor—think alphabet prints, animal posters, and interactive visuals that engage and inspire.
These pieces don’t just decorate the room, they spark conversation, curiosity, and early learning.
This is also the time to introduce age-appropriate accessories that encourage independence: accessible storage, low bookshelves, and soft, comfortable seating for reading and relaxing. And the pièce de résistance - a 2-in1- climbing wall and slide!

A Seamless Transition
While the overall look has evolved, the design stays rooted in the same foundational elements that made the nursery feel so special. Key furniture pieces, like the cot-turned-bed remain. The colour palette still includes hints of the soft blue used in the nursery—but now it’s paired with richer textures and bolder contrasts.
By maintaining a sense of continuity, the transition feels natural—not like a redesign, but a next chapter.
